Authentication is verifying if something/someone is what it's actually suppose to be.
Lack of authentication whilst using internet facilities can lead to problems such as hacking and identity theft.

Anonymous said...

Authentication is verification that the person, in this case, that has access to the internet, is allowed to use this facility.

Lack of authentication can lead to accessing of private information or as Immaculate metioned, identity theft and other crimes.

It therfore limits the security and privacy, putting people at risk.

Unknown said...

(a) authentication: the process by which one verfies that someone is who they claim. The most common method of authentication is the use of the username and password. However, any other means of identifying a person's identity can be used. Authentication is essential when using internet facilities. If there are no formal branches of security used to verify users, information can be accessed by literally anyone online.

Immaculate said...

Lack of authentication can lead to:

- Hacking
- Viruses would easily spread
- Identity theft
- Unreliable internet sources
- Computer program's could act as a user.

bi) Pornography, Gambling (online poker), Gaming, Cyber sex, Social networking sites

Unknown said...

a.) authentication is the idea of establishing and comfirming the truth or identity about something or someone.

lack of authentication is a risk in terms of people's privacy and security of personal data. an example of authentication is usernames and passwords when trying to access a personal account. Hence if there is no password to 'authenticate' the identity of the user trying to access the account, then anyone can get hold of any confidential matters within the account.

(b)(i) there are several examples of internet addictions:
- pornography
- online gambling
- facebook/ internet chat rooms
- video games/ gaming
- online shopping
- fantasy football leagues
- horoscopes
- celeb gossip
- downloading movies/ music

(ii) these addictions can cause people to:
- develop abnormal disfunctional behavior
- become anti socail
- loose alot of money
- waste a lot of time and money
- become engrossed in an unreaslistic lifesyle/ environment

Tasin said...

bii) Consequences can include, mood modification. One can become more aggressive, depressed.
One can suffer from widthrawal symptoms.
The breakdown of family relations as well.
Bad debts as well such as in the case of online gambling. One can lead to borrow money from 'loan sharks'.

Anonymous said...

The consequences of addiction can be divided, according to, http://library.thinkquest.org/06aug/02049/types.htm, into the following:
Health problems
Psychological problems
Social problems
Financial problems
Familial problems
Academic problems
Occupational problems

Each may be due to a different type of addiction.
Financial for example can be due to increasing amounts of gambling that a person does. He/She may use all of their money in hope of gaining more but may end up loosing everyhting. This in turn could lead to familial problems where families become disfunctional. This may be because of the arguments that result in one perosn in the family using up all the finance and not being very sociable.

1) Authentication, in the law of evidence, is the process by which documentary evidence and other physical evidence is proven to be genuine, and not a forgery. Generally, authentication can be shown in one of two ways. First, a witness can testify as to the chain of custody through which the evidence passed from the time of the discovery up until the trial. Second, the evidence can be authenticated by the opinion of an expert witness examining the evidence to determine if it has all of the properties that it would be expected to have if it were authentic.

Some suggested soltuions could be:
Self-help
Physical
Psychological treatments

Examples of self-help could be timing oneself and alternating the activities one peforms during the days. Make some time for exercise and other physical activities.

Also, other than the above solution there are specific software that help limit the amount of time you spend on a certain game for example.

the social impacts of over depending on the internet is that if there is no internet the person is renderd helpless as they are soo acustomed to usin the internet in their daily lives.
another effect of ever relying on the internet is that we lose touch with reality and the environment. the body and brain becomes so used to the computer and internet to do very basic things that over time the we cannot do the very basci things for ourselves i.e. simple calculations.
Another social problem is the person using the internet becomes like a 'cabbage' because they hardley move around as they are glued to the screens. they lack exersice and interaction with others.

Anonymous said...

Over dependance, is the over reliance on someting and in this case the internet.
People use the internet for all sorts of things and become 'disabled' without it.
For example: The internet can act as a method of researching for all sorts of information. Becoming over dependant on this leads to people no thinking for themselves and instead just typing it into google. This may lead to less social interactions and a 'laziness' to go through other sources of knowledge.

Another area where people are dependant on the internet is communication.

Unknown said...

(c)(ii) social impacts:
- over reliance on the internet for communication can destroy any intra-family relations since members loose that personal touch if they only communicate via the internet.

- when using the internet for research, there is always a danger of plagiarism.

- internet overdependence is dangerous in the sense that, because people let the internet control everything, their lives will come to a stad still if there is no internet.

Immaculate said...

The areas in which people over depend on the internet are:

- Research
- To read the paper
- To watch movies
- To listen to music
- To catch up on celeb gossip
- To communicate with friends and family
- To start a relationship
- To show off looks for new profile pictures
- To do and order shopping.

Anonymous said...

As people become more over dependant on the internet they tend to reduce the amount of time they spend with people and in fact increase their own health risks.

People and machines:
Machines become indispensable for us humans and although they are used to communicate with other humans, we loose touch of doing that very thing in a social context.

Also, there is less privacy in the sense that a person who has provided their information for others to see on the internet is vulnerable to much damage if anything goes wrong. For example: If their credit card numbers are stolen and used.

Unknown said...

(d) Net etiquette rules:
- no flaming (a form of verbal abuse when a person intentionally attacks and abuse another person for whatever reason)

- respect other's copyrights

- Do not spam

- Use proper grammar and spelling

- Do not share passwords and usernames

- use strong passwords

- when researching, make sure to sight sources

Anonymous said...

There cannot be a set net etiquette as to how to behave. People are different although some things that are considered offensive or not good for ones health and behaviour should be prohibited.
For example: Pornography, which is a major issue. For some religions and our human moral values, this may be considered not natural and not beneficial in any way.
The question becomes though how do you prevent things as such from being posted and spread over the internet?

Do you think there could ever be such a thing as the internet police?

Unknown said...

Appropriate behaviour that we should see while using the internet is one of respect for others and their privacy in such areas like Chat-rooms, forums, conference rooms, member rooms. we should always care for others especially to note not using faul language and explicit things that may hurt ot offend others.

Rishad said...

b)iii) Motivational therapy in order to demonstrate how the addiction is hurting the addict/those to close to him/her.

A reasonable goal for Internet addiction therapy is a reduction in total use of the net; reduction measures include:
Inbuilt software in internet sites that have countdown timers and log the user off using their identifying IP address after certain duration of time.

Unknown said...

i totaly agree with you Salima. ther should not be a set of internet etiquette. :)

Rishad said...

c)ii)

- Spreading of rumours, false knowledge can happen in an instant causing misinformation and damaging reputation
- Businesses that over-rely on internet tend to shut-out prospective employees/clients who are not computer proficient or have access to the internet in order to access their services.
They also tend to run risks of information being lost or not available due to hacking/tampering of data or due to network failure
- Lack of formal communication links between people means that there is less time spent with people seeing eye-to-eye, getting to know one another in reality which could help in authenticating them, and allow for better judgement of their character’s and the claims that they make.

Anonymous said...

In addition for people's own personal safety, like nafisa has listed, sharing of passwords, should be limited so that people are not at risk of being discriminated.

Anonymous said...

Thankyou Terry:)
I like the way you described people as becoming cabbages. It is very true:P

Immaculate said...

Social impact of over depending on the internet:

- Control:
People would start over relying on the internet to an extent in which everything they do has to be from the internet. Thus, the interet would control them.

- Reliability:
The information on the internet is not 100% reliable, hence users may be mislead by the information they read and because of their over dependance on the internet, users may believe the wrong information.

(e)(i) "Five years from now the internet will be dominated by Chinese-language content" said by Google CEO Eric Schmidt

Anonymous said...

English seems to be the language that dominated the internet, but many more languages are starting to be used over the internet as more and more people from different countries atrat to access the internet.
Websites and articles can now easily be translated into various languages.
Therefore, you can say that a variety of languages dominate the internet, namely: Spanish, English, French, Mandarin, etc.

Anonymous said...

English being a dominating language can encourage those who do not know it to learn it and therefore increase globalisation due to the fact that many more people will be able to communicate with each other if they have a language in common.
Also, many people on the other hand may be discouraged because if they do not know english then they may feel like they cannot access as much information as they would like to.

Unknown said...

(e)(ii) since the English language is dominating the internet, it poses many social impacts:

- equality of access; especially for people who are not fluent in English. they will be unable to use the service provided online simply because they do not speak the language

Online trading stores. Amazon and ebay rely solely on the internet for their transaction.
Another one can be Entertainment. Today a lot of people use p2p sites to download latest tv shows and movies.

the languages that have dominated the internet is English being the leading language used in the internet followed by mandarin chinese. mandarin chinese is developing at a faster rate than any other language which could be dangerous as the larger population does not know mandarin therefore the internet will be inexplicable.

From these two stats, we can see that although english is only the second largest language in terms of number of speakers in the world, it has a greater influence than mandarin chinese because a broader spectrum of people from more regions of the world speak it and thus it is why it is the official language of the internet...

Rishad said...

The consequences of this is that one in every six people on this earth will not know how to use the internet :-P

Another impact can be access to misleading information. In the internet there are so many opinions and pieces of information related to one subject that it is difficult to know which is correct.

If you depend on the internet for you income then if something happens, you may be in trouble. Especially if you no not have a back-up plan

solutions to indetity theft is first and formost. DO NOT DISCLOSE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION TO OTHER PEOPLE. things like pin codes, and indentification number should be kept private.
secondly, there are software that allow users to once in a while change or authenticate their personal information. this will ensure that whoever is trying to hack or get access to your personal information will have a harder time or not be able to as the codes are changed reguraly.

2. Virtual dating addiction - a great quantity of internet friends.
3. Obtrusive need of Internet - online gaming, shopping.
4. Obtrusive web-surfing - endless internet searching.
5. PC addiction - obtrusive gaming.

More and more people will be confronted with consequences such as divorce and physical symptoms which will force them to seek both medical and psychological treatment. Some physical symptoms include "cyber shakes," dry eyes, carpal tunnel syndrome and headaches. i) Which languages have dominated the internet?
The English language dominates the internet

ii) What are the social impacts of English as the main web language dominating the internet?
English Is the Language of Culture
While all countries have their own actors, actresses, and singers, those that achieve global recognition are almost always English performers. If you grab the iPod of someone in a non-English speaking country, you will probably find a few songs on it sung in English, if not the majority of the songs. Pop culture icons are global celebrities, and the vast majority of those who achieve global recognition are English speaking.

Examples of unsuitable material posted over the interet are:

- Pornography
- Gambling
- Free Downloads
- Games

Unknown said...

the diffrent ways of controling access to such material is by having a secure filtring software for a school lets say where the teachers can track the activities on the computer. this will alarm the students and keep them away from explicit material as they are aware of the consequences.
another suggestion to have a firewall where certain websites are blocked. for instance this school has a firewall where they block facebook and many other chatting websites plus any explicit material that might come across as ponography. this is primarily for the benefit of the student as they are very harmful for health.

Identity theft over the internet has many impacts. Firstly because the internet is a medium to access all sorts of personal information of different people and in many ways too.In an article I was reading, the identity theft of bank account information is so bad that banks loose out on their consumer confidence. This confidence lost in the United States, in the year 2007 could have earned them $8.3 billion dollars more!

Individuals can be affected as well through the theft of their personal information. If the credit card sof individuals are stolen, they could easily be charged large amounts of money by the banks due to soemone else spending using their card number. Also, personal information that has been stolen could put someone's life at risk. A person may want to carry out a personal vendetta and end up harming a person in a real life.

Immaculate said...

The different ways to control access to such materials are:

- Firewall
- Encryption
- No internet around!

The most common example of unsuitable material posted is pornography. This can be a bad influence on many people and can distort 'natural' human behaviour, eventually even causing dependance.
Also, gossip and other rumour mongering sites can really spoil the name of those that we know especially celebrities. Is it right for someone to do such a thing?

Solutions include blocking sites that offer such information and also warning people about them. If people are educated about these influuencal unsuitable material then they would think twice before taking part in any of it.
