Video Conferencing:

Video conferencing is a communications method in which users are able to comminicate with each other as if they are in the same room using video and sound.
Users need webcam to be able to see each other, speaker to hear each other, microphone to speak 2 each other and broadband internet to access the net.
This technology is useful for various situations especially business wise. Instead of having to travel to a certain area, users are able to have their meeting through video conferencing in real time no matter where they are located.
Other benefits of video conferencing are:
- Saving on travels
- Saves time
- Reduces pressure as users are able to communicate at the comfort of their own home
- Can use it at any time of the day
- As many people can use it at the same time

However, some disadvantages include:
- Equipment might be expensive for some users
- Personal aspects may not be reached like achieveing eye contact

Virtual conferencing allows you to hold a virtual meeting. That is, you are in one location and students are in another.
There are two methods by which you can have a virtual conference. You can have a web or video conference. With a web conference the facilitator and participants are at their respective desktops and the conference is held online using the internet. For video conferencing the facilitator and participants need to be in specific locations where video-conferencing equipment is set up.
there are a number of web confrencing software that enable you to hold a web confrencing meeting such as Elluminate® Live! and Adobe® Connect™. it is difficult to give step by step instructions on how to use the software aas each software has its own interface. althugh there are some similarities between the sotwares

immaculate, are there other diadvantages that may arise through the use of video confrencing??

What is the future of video conferencing? what do you think will replace video conferencing?

Terry,
What issues arise when using virtual conferencing?

PULL TECHNOLOGY:
•Can also be referred to as client pull
•In this mode of network communication, the client is the one who sends the initial request for data. This request is then responded by the server.
•Push technology is the reverse of this: therefore is when the server pushes data to the client.
•In a pull technology, clients request data from centralized servers.
•This form of technology is used on the internet for HTTP page requests from websites: where the client requests for data and the server finds the information and then pushes it back to the client.

How is virtual conferencing different from video conferencing?

Give me examples of pull technology in operation while using the internet.

Technological convergence is the tendency for different technological systems to evolve towards performing similar tasks.

the issues that arise from virtual confrencing are ones similar to video confrencing such as expensive equipment, privacy issues and the implimentation of a secure and string internet connection.

the diffrence between video confrencing and virtual confrencing is that virtual confrencing acts as the bigger umbrella to video confrencing. for virtual confrencing you are actually made to feel like you are in a meeting or a board room. there are softwares created to dipict the situations that happen in a meeting. whereas in video confrencing you see the people live and its real

Examples of pull technology:

- Downloading Web pages via a Web browser

- Requesting mail

- Downloading music/video/documents

Terry, yes there are quite a few other disadvantages that are included with the use of video conferencing, for example, people may start stalking other users and the internet connection may not be 100% efficient, hence if there is a situation in which there is an important meeting through video conferencing and a user's internet has refused to work, the user would be the one who loses out. Therefore, the internet may not be completly reliable.

Mr Serem, I think that another technology would replace video conferencing like the use of virtual conferencing. It makes it seem like the meeting is real rather than through video. However, there are some limitations to the technology.

Rishad said...

This could include mergence of technologies, improved compatibility, and support for a number of hardware/data formats

Terry

A company in China has opened a branch in South Africa. Both staff in the different countries require to meet often to share ideas. Which type of conferencing btw video and virtual conferencing will you recommend for them? Why?

Digital television (DTV) is the transmission of audio and video by discrete (digital) signals, in contrast to the analog signals used by analog TV.

Advantages

- It also offers multiple programming choices, called multicasting, and interactive capabilities.

- HDTV is available.
Data streaming is available.

Digital television supports many different picture formats defined by the combination of size, aspect ratio (width to height ratio) and interlacing.

Rishad said...

a good example is Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP)

This combines data and voice transfer over telephone lines

with technological convergence - you can perform a number of tasks on a single device. It is cheaper, safer, convient. Imagine if you had to carry your laptop and a printer with its cable and a phone, ipod, playstation!

nowadays, you can browse the net, check your mail, play video games, listen to music even view, edit and print your documents on a single device!

More advantages on Digital TV

improved picture clarity and sharper sound;
no more ghost images, distorted pictures or adjusting your aerial.

more channels and an interactive menu.

You can also see what time programmes are on with the electronic programme guide (EPG),

Problems with DIgital TV

however in digital TV it will either be viewed or nothing can be seen on the screen at all.

WEB 2.0
This is a term used to describe a new generation of Web services and applications with an increasing emphasis on human collaboration.
A brilliant example of this is this akamitgs blog. We can put up our answers, get answers and view others' answers and question eachother. The technologies of Web 2.0 involve increased user interaction, that is, gaining output as well as contributing input, rather than just the traditional method of just obtaining output. The technology gives users the liberty to express opinions which helps others to see web information from many different perspectives, rather than just one.
Examples of Web 2.0 technologies:
blogging
Ajax and other new technologies
Google Base and other free Web services
RSS-generated syndication
social bookmarking
mash-ups
wikis and other collaborative applications
dynamic as opposed to static site content
interactive encyclopedias and dictionaries
ease of data creation, modification or deletion by individual users
advanced gaming.

How can video conferencing be used (by others) in a negative way?

What social and ethical issues arise as a result?

Push technology, or server push, describes a style of Internet-based communication where the request for a given transaction is initiated by the publisher or central server.

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push_technology

Unknown said...

I think the future of web 2.0 holds both pros and cons.
On one hand, the world will 'come closer' in the simplest way. All types of people will be in a better position to explore the world and people from varyin backgrounds. By types, I mean those who do not have finance to travel to experience the world for real.
However on the other hand others will tend to take advantage of the increased freedom of utilizing the web to manipulate people and put up inappropriate content without having to reveal their identities.
Furthermore, increasing usage of web 2.0 can be a threat in that it can diminish physical human interaction making people 'robotic', since they just sit at home and practically forget physical socialization and how to behave face to face towards other humans.

Salima

Give us some practical examples as we use the internet. What triggers push technology? How do you became a victim or not a victim of push technology?

How is this push technology useful?

Anonymous said...

far the use of push technology has only been discussed in terms of the world wide web. There is another, perhaps even more useful, application of push technology in Intranets. Intranets are simply local 'internets' in business's and other organisations. They allow transfer of information between users. Now important company news and information can be pushed straight to the Screen of the employees. This could be in the form of screen savers or tickers (scrolling bars of text). A good example of a useful application of push within companies is automatic notification of events. For example, by linking a push system to a database of stocks and components in a manufacturing company a manager could be alerted if the number of a particular component drops below a certain level. Some of the "push" providers are PointCast and Marimba...

Anonymous said...

PROBLEMS:

One problem that arose with Pointcast was that if there were many users of it within a company then it could eat up to 30% of their networks capacity and so companies started banning it.

Another potential problem, is that all this downloading of sounds and images, applets, video etc. in the background is going to eat up hard disk space. If you subscribe to twenty channels and these all contain multimedia then your hard disk space could quickly dissappear if it is not organised regularly.

Also subscribers are going to be swarmed with advertising within their chosen channels
